Title: Land science under changing demography
Outline:
This intensive four-day course focuses on global to local environmental and social issues caused by changes in land systems. Our globe faces big challenges of rapid increase in population, which is negative for developing sustainable societies. But at the same time, population decrease occurs in many countries such as Japan and those in Europe. The decreasing population gives difficult practice of land management. These two opposite trends require different knowledge, technologies, approaches and policies to address and transform our society to more sustainable and resilient systems. Through lectures, discussion, presentation, and work sessions, students will gain basic theory and practical methodology to solve these issues. This course is organized by Global Land Programme (GLP) Japan Nodal Office based in Hokkaido University. GLP is an international community of scientists and practitioners trying to foster the study of land systems and the co-design of solutions for global sustainability.
