Scope
This intensive four-day course focuses on hazards and resultant disasters that instantly give enormous changes against our land on the globe. Japan is one of the hot spots with hazardous processes such as earthquake, landslide, typhoon, and volcanic eruption. The country still remains in the stage of recovery from the tsunami disasters occurred in 2011. Sustainable land use, reduction of vulnerability, and increase in resilience requires relevant research methods and approaches. Through lectures, discussion, presentation, and work sessions, students will gain basic theory and practical methodology to contribute to these issues.
This course is organized by Global Land Programme (GLP) Japan Nodal Office based in Hokkaido University, which is run under a consortium agreement with five universities across Japan. GLP, one of the core projects of Future Earth (FE), is an international community of scientists and practitioners trying to foster the study of land systems and the co-design of solutions for global sustainability.
