[Report] International Short Training Course: Being Involved in International Research Projects: Exp

On 20th April 2018, an international short training course was successfully held in the Central Department of Geography of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Twenty-five Master’s students from the Central Department of Geography of Tribhuvan University have joined this program to learn some of the current land science related issues observed in the Himalayan region through the collaborative international field research projects between Tribhuvan University (TU) and Hokkaido University (HU). This one-day training course also celebrated the long-term contribution of Prof. Dr. Narendra Raj Khanal, the head of the department, to geography and land science.

Brief history of TU-HU research relationship, the meaning of conducting research and social-change study project in the Khumbu region have been presented by Hokkaido University. Experiences in the projects on mountain hazards including glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in the Nepal Himalaya, and the Imja Glacial Lake project have been shared by Tribhuvan University. During the program, deep discussion about how to develop and how to be involved in an international collaborative research project has been done among the Master’s students and professors. It was pity that demonstration of drones (UAVs) was not conducted due to the technical problem, but it is rescheduled on 5th May.

Many Master’s students reported that they had learned a lot from those presentations and discussion, which would be helpful in their future study, although this was just a one-day training course.
